GUWAHATI: In a major breakthrough on fake currency rackets in the state, a police team from Nagaon on Tuesday conducted raids in Hatigaon area of Guwahati and busted a major base being used for the racket.

During the operation conducted by Nagaon Police in the capital city, fake currency notes amounting to around Rs 20 lakhs, along with printing machines used to print the notes, were confiscated.

Moreover, police also managed to arrest four people, including a woman, in connection with running the fake currency racket.

The criminals apprehended by the police were identified as Saddiqul Islam, Mofizul Islam, Aizul Rahman and Rima Baishya.

It was apparent that the racketeers had taken on rent a room in Guwahati's Hatigaon, from which they have been running their operation, according to official sources.

Police sources also informed that an investigation has been launched and the mastermind of the operation is being sought for detailed information about the racket, including the people the fake notes were supplied to.

Fake notes, mainly of Rs 500 denomination, have flooded the market in Guwahati and elsewhere in the state. Shopkeepers in the city complained that fake notes are turning up quite frequently during payment by customers and that it is hard to distinguish between real and fake notes if one is not careful.

It should be mentioned here that police had busted another fake notes racket in Darrang district of Assam on Monday.

The police, in a late night raid at Lengripara locality in Mangaldoi, arrested six people including three women. They were identified as Zaman Hussain, Anwar Hussain, Syed Hussain, Rijuma Hussain, Joba Das and Priya Rai.

In this incident also, police recovered fake Indian currency notes amounting to lakhs of rupees hidden away in several places inside the rented room in Mangaldoi.
